CONTRIBUTION As their Creative Services Manager, I built the internal team, created workflow and project management processes, and repaired communication gaps that existed between the engineers and the creatives. In concert with the marketing director and brand management teams, designers, writers, and photographers, I led the development of this new generation of branding for Cascade and its collection of five subsidiary brands. RESULTS The company’s branding became some of the best in the industry. CONTRIBUTION I worked as a brand consultant on the development of their updated brand guidelines. After co-leading a Brand Gravity workshop for Smartwool, we identified new brand attributes that focused on balancing performance with comfort, developed new storytelling language and created their tagline: GO FAR. It was called mLife. ATT needed new cell phone packaging to convey this inspiring manifesto. CONTRIBUTION I was one of the Art Directors on the months-long concepting project to create a breakthrough presentation for smartphone packaging. Apple had just set the stage for minimalist white product packaging. Along with a team of designers, we developed this blue-stripe package solution. I presented it to the client and it was accepted. My job then shifted to co-creating packaging guidelines based on this design, traveling to packaging press checks across the country, and as art director for the photoshoots of their jewel-like smart phones. CONTRIBUTION As Creative Services Manager for Cascade, I provided art direction where needed, but my primary responsibility with the workbook was maintaining harmonious relations between the myriad of stakeholders. New specifications, selling points, illustrations and imagery were all needed, at one time. This was where the rubber met the road in the product development cycle. It was always a long sprint to get this info into the system in time for the next milestone. RESULTS Cascade had one of the most diverse, interesting and innovative collections of products in the industry. CONTRIBUTION Working as Creative Services Manager, I supported the new digital manager in his goal of developing a web presence that presented all the Cascade sub-brands with a familial link back to the Cascade parent brand, while providing stand-alone value propositions and best practices in direct selling functionality. They wanted a UI that fixed their messaging hierarchy problems and invited users to come and explore. The site also needed to provide robust search functionality with an easy-to-use interface. CONTRIBUTION As Web Designer, I provided them with several concepts for site architecture. Once they chose the best functional approach, I moved to design. They had me visit some of their libraries to see the colors and textures that their interior designer had chosen. I had fun blending texture color and 3D effects into a design that solved their information hierarchy problems and gave them a workable skin to apply their robust search engine. Our challenge was getting imagery that both communicated the brand promise and highlighted the latest product benefit or feature. CONTRIBUTION As the Creative Services Manager, I managed a pool of approximately 80 global photographers. The best way to help them and Thermarest succeed was to use my quick sketching skills to visualize scenarios that demonstrated the brand and/or product promise. I created many thumbnail sketches that provided clear conceptual direction for the photography process. Using a refined shot list, stylistic guidelines, an openness to spontaneity, and lots of coffee, I’ve produced many great shots for several brands. We decided on the idea of building the words “Work” and “Play” out of the materials of work and play. We then went about the meticulous task of acquiring a myriad of these materials for the photoshoot that took place in our on-site photo studio. Department Recruiting Video ©2016 TrueBlue SITUATION TrueBlue was increasing its emphasis on developing a more robust IT infrastructure. To do so, they needed to attract new in-house talent from Seattle to Tacoma. They needed a recruiting video that highlighted the little know benefits of working and living in Tacoma. CONTRIBUTION As Creative Director of a department that was new to video, I lead the procurement of sound and video equipment and the build-out of an in-house video studio. Working closely with my team to ensure stakeholder satisfaction, I oversaw the storyboarding, casting and production of this recruiting video. They needed a promotional video that introduced the functionality of this app. CONTRIBUTION As the Creative Director, I worked with the TrueBlue brand management team and the outside agency Rusty George Creative to oversee the development and storyboard of this video.
