I oversaw the brand designer as she brought this new persona to life with an entire brand refresh.       <image:caption>SITUATION Cascade Designs was a leading innovator in the outdoor equipment industry. However, their branding had been inspired and often led by company founding engineers. In order to maintain social relevance and better communicate their innovative offerings, it was time to take their brand language to the next level. CONTRIBUTION As their Creative Services Manager, I built the internal team, created workflow and project management processes, and repaired communication gaps that existed between the engineers and the creatives. In concert with the marketing director and brand management teams, designers, writers, and photographers, I led the development of this new generation of branding for Cascade and its collection of five subsidiary brands. RESULTS The company’s branding became some of the best in the industry. Cascade remains one of the outdoor industry’s most innovative and well-loved companies in this era of quick knock-off, and OEM “me-too” products.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SITUATION Smartwool was known for amazing merino wool products. But it also needed to be a relevant lifestyle brand. Their branding was not adequately leveraging the aspirational potential of their mountain lifestyle and culture, nor were they successfully paying-off how wool enhances performance.   CONTRIBUTION I worked as a brand consultant on the development of their updated brand guidelines. After co-leading a Brand Gravity workshop for Smartwool, we identified new brand attributes that focused on balancing performance with comfort, developed new storytelling language and created their tagline: GO FAR. FEEL GOOD. RESULTS Smartwool has moved into a market leadership role in the technical-comfort space.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SITUATION ATT Wireless employed Ogilvy Mather to develop a new messaging campaign for the next generation of smart phones. It was called mLife. ATT needed new cell phone packaging to convey this inspiring manifesto. CONTRIBUTION I was one of the Art Directors on the months-long concepting project to create a breakthrough presentation for smartphone packaging. Apple had just set the stage for minimalist white product packaging. Along with a team of designers, we developed this blue-stripe package solution. I presented it to the client and it was accepted. My job then shifted to co-creating packaging guidelines based on this design, traveling to packaging press checks across the country, and as art director for the photoshoots of their jewel-like smart phones. RESULTS ATT Wireless had great market success with their collection of smartphones until the debut of the iPhone!</image:caption>

New specifications, selling points, illustrations and imagery were all needed, at one time. This was where the rubber met the road in the product development cycle. It was always a long sprint to get this info into the system in time for the next milestone. RESULTS Cascade had one of the most diverse, interesting and innovative collections of products in the industry. Its workbooks were known to be one of the best-selling tools.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>SITUATION Snohomish County needed a new quintessentially Northwest website for their Sno-Isle library branches. They wanted a UI that fixed their messaging hierarchy problems and invited users to come and explore. The site also needed to provide robust search functionality with an easy-to-use interface. CONTRIBUTION As Web Designer, I provided them with several concepts for site architecture. Once they chose the best functional approach, I moved to design. They had me visit some of their libraries to see the colors and textures that their interior designer had chosen. I had fun blending texture color and 3D effects into a design that solved their information hierarchy problems and gave them a workable skin to apply their robust search engine. RESULTS Sno-Isle got a website that aesthetically pleased the marketing team, worked well for their back-end programmers, and provided their members with a fun, friendly and informative experience.</image:caption>

After collaborating with a local GIS mapping expert to make the map elements as attractive, informative and readable as possible, I assembled the elements into this large-format print piece. CONTRIBUTION As the Creative Services Manager, I worked with the manager of product safety, brand manager and an illustrator to redesign these instructions. I redesigned the template to optimize step-by-step readability and information hierarchy for an international audience. RESULTS We achieved the project goals of improving international comprehension of safe and reliable product use.</image:caption>

The best way to help them and Thermarest succeed was to use my quick sketching skills to visualize scenarios that demonstrated the brand and/or product promise. I created many thumbnail sketches that provided clear conceptual direction for the photography process. RESULTS This one was shot by Dan Patitucci and ended up on the cover of a Thermarest catalog.</image:caption>

CONTRIBUTION As Creative Director of a department that was new to video, I lead the procurement of sound and video equipment and the build-out of an in-house video studio. Working closely with my team to ensure stakeholder satisfaction, I oversaw the storyboarding, casting and production of this recruiting video. They needed a promotional video that introduced the functionality of this app. CONTRIBUTION As the Creative Director, I worked with the TrueBlue brand management team and the outside agency Rusty George Creative to oversee the development and storyboard of this video. RESULTS This video was well received, but both the app and the video subsequently went through several revisions before being launched.</image:caption>
